When it comes to retirement, women tend to worry more than
men. Of course, women also have more reasons to worry, according to a joint
study by the Hartford Financial Services Group and MIT AgeLab. In almost every
category surveyed, women scored higher than men.
Inflation: 83% of
women are concerned about the rising cost of living, compared to 69% of men.
Health: 75% of
women are somewhat worried about declining health, while 87% are worried about
healthcare costs.
Longevity: Women
tend to live longer than men, meaning they are also more likely to outlive
their retirement income. It's no wonder, then, that 64% of women regard
longevity uneasily compared to 46% of men.
Women's concerns are well-justified. Not only do they live
longer than their male counterparts and remain active longer, but they also
receive less retirement income. According to the Women's Institute for a Secure
Retirement, women's median retirement income is only a little more than half
compared to men.
So what's a woman to do? Below are some helpful tips that can
turn worrying into fuel for a more secure retirement.
Protection: Because
Social
Security and pension benefits depend on earning power, women on average receive
less income from these sources than men. It is vital for women to protect their
assets and seek other forms of retirement income, such as longevity annuities
that pay a guaranteed stream of income that you cannot outlive.
Growth: A bearish
economy seems to be the trigger for many people to switch to conservative
investments. While this isn't a completely bad idea in down times, investing
too conservatively can limit chances of long term growth. Since women usually
spend less time in the workforce then men, it is more important for them to
look for opportunities for long-term income growth and increase their savings.
Health: Women
tend to be more active than men in old age. Consequently, women end up being
the caregiver of their spouses, family members, or loved ones. However, their
own health is just as important, bearing both physical and financial
implications.
While these tips do not guarantee success nor are they applicable
to every woman, however, they are beneficial to keep in mind.
